Mesoscopic Self-Assembly: A Shift to Complexity
نویسنده
چکیده
By focusing on the construction of thermodynamically stable structures, the self-assembly of mesoscopic systems has proven capable of formidable achievements in the bottomup engineering of microand nanosystems. Yet, inspired by an analogous evolution in supramolecular chemistry, synthetic mesoscopic self-assembly may have a lot more ahead, within reach of a shift toward fully three-dimensional architectures, collective interactions of building blocks and kinetic control. All over these challenging fronts, complexity holds the key.

Determination of mercury (II) by spectrophotometric method based on self assembly of gold nanoparticles
Due to the binding of the –COO- group with the mercury (II), gold nanoparticlesfunctionalized with glutathione can self-assemble to form a supermolecular network in the HAc-NaAc buffer solution. The aggregation of functionalized gold nanoparticles and mercury (II)caused the shift of maximum absorption peak of the UV-Vis spectrum from 520 nm to 609 nm.Based on this principle, a simple spectropho...

We study the problem of the self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) into finite mesoscopic structures with a programmed local morphology and complex overall shape. Our proposed building blocks are NPs that are directionally functionalized with DNA. The combination of directionality and selectivity of interactions allows one to avoid unwanted metastable configurations, which have been shown to lead...
متن کاملMesoscale modeling of mechanics of carbon nanotubes: Self-assembly, self-folding and fracture
Using concepts of hierarchical multi-scale modeling, we report development of a mesoscopic model for single wall carbon nanotubes with parameters completely derived from full atomistic simulations. The parameters in the mesoscopic model are fit to reproduce elastic, fracture and adhesion properties of carbon nanotubes, in this article demonstrated for (5,5) carbon nanotubes. The mesoscale model...

This contribution describes the morphology and energetic stability of different types of nanostructured carbon, including fullerenes, nanotubes, scrolls, peapods, and more complex foams. When structurally perfect, these systems are very stable even under extreme conditions. Specific structural defects offer an unusual, energetically accessible path to an inter-conversion between different isome...
متن کاملMesoscopic structure prediction of nanoparticle assembly and coassembly: theoretical foundation.
In this work, we present a theoretical framework that unifies polymer field theory and density functional theory in order to efficiently predict ordered nanostructure formation of systems having considerable complexity in terms of molecular structures and interactions. We validate our approach by comparing its predictions with previous simulation results for model systems. We illustrate the fle...
